A Muslim should look for what is good

Umar on Brotherhood: A Muslim should look for what is good in his brothers and give them excuses
Umar ibn Al-Khattab, leader of the believers, said, “It is not lawful for a Muslim who hears a word from his brother to think badly of him when he can find something good about it.
[At-Tamheed, Ibn Abdul al-Barr 18/20]
قال أمير المؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه لا يحل لامرئ مسلم سمع من أخيه كلمة أن يظن بها سوءا وهو يجد لها في شيء من الخير مصدرا

Ibn Hisham: The confrontation between the companions of Muhammad and the Christian King of Abyssinia
Ja’far ibn Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, stood and addressed the Negus in the following words, “O king! We were plunged in the depth of ignorance and barbarism; we adored idols; we lived in immorality; we ate dead bodies; and we spoke abominations; we disregarded every feeling of humanity and the duties of hospitality and neighborhood were neglected; we knew no law but that of the strong, but when Allah raised among us a man of whose birth, truthfulness, honesty, and purity we were aware; and he called to the oneness of Allah and taught us not to associate anything with Him. He forbade us the worship of idols and he enjoined us to speak the truth; to be faithful to our trusts; to be merciful and to regard the rights of the neighbors and kith and kin; he forbade us to speak evil of women or to eat the substance of orphans; he ordered us to flee from vices, and to refrain from evil; to offer prayers, to give alms, and to observe fast. We have believed in him, we have accepted his teachings and his command to worship Allah and not to associate anything with Him; and we have allowed what He has allowed and prohibited what He has prohibited. For this reason, our people have risen against us; they have persecuted us in order to make us forsake the worship of Allah and return to the worship of idols and other abominations. They have tortured and harmed us until we found no safety among them, so we have come to your country and we hope you will protect us from oppression.”
The Negus said to them, “Do you have anything with you from Allah?” Ja’far said, “Yes,” so the Negus said, “Then recite it to us,” and he recited from memory the verses from Surah Maryam and the Negus, along with the bishops in his realm, were moved to tears until their bears became wet. The Negus said, “Verily, this scripture and what has come from Jesus have emerged from the same lamp. You are released, for by Allah, I will never surrender them to the Quraish.”
